The City of Gulf Shores has secured an additional $2 million from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to finalize the Laguna Cove Little Lagoon Natural Resource Protection Project, bringing the total investment to $6.4 million. This project, funded through the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill NRDA process, will transform 53 acres of coastal habitat into a protected natural sanctuary.

The City of Gulf Shores has received an additional $2 million from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to finalize the Laguna Cove Little Lagoon Natural Resource Protection Project. This latest funding boost brings ADCNR's total contribution to the project to $6.4 million.

Funded entirely through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the project will transform 53 acres of coastal habitat on Little Lagoon's south shore into a protected natural sanctuary. The City acquired the site in 2019 using NRDA funds and it boasts 6,100 feet of shoreline, encompassing vital wetlands and crucial habitat areas. Conservation remains the project's primary goal, with meticulously planned passive recreation amenities designed to minimize environmental impact. These amenities include nature trails, wetland boardwalks, birding areas, kayaking access points, and interpretive educational spaces. The additional funding will also support the construction of a small restroom facility for visitors. In November 2017, the City Council authorized an agreement with ADCNR to implement the Laguna Cove Little Lagoon Natural Resource Protection Project. Subsequently, in June 2019, the City purchased the property using NRDA funds. However, due to escalating construction costs, the City requested additional NRDA funding from ADCNR last year. This $2 million injection will enable the project's completion. The Laguna Cove Little Lagoon Natural Resource Protection Project is just one piece of Gulf Shores' larger initiative to restore and safeguard its natural resources. Other projects include the Oyster Bay & Bon Secour Wetland Restoration Project and the Little Lagoon Restoration Project. Dan Bond, Director of Natural Resources for the City of Gulf Shores, expressed gratitude for ADCNR's continued support, stating, 'We are grateful for the additional funding provided by ADCNR for this important project. The protection of this property will have a significant impact on the health and vitality of Little Lagoon and its surrounding areas.
