Guardians feel they've hired the right manager even if he's never managed before.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Someone who is no longer connected with the Guardians said the “new guy” who replaces “the skipper” was going to have quite an act to follow.
He caught 10 years in the big leagues and another six in the minors. He was named to two All-Star teams. But he’s never managed and he just finished his lone year of coaching in Seattle. So who helps Vogt learn the X-Y-Z’s of managing? No matter how long you’ve played or coached, the game can get up on a manager quick come the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
The Guardians believe Vogt has those qualities. But will they change with the new job? Now he’s the manager instead of a teammate. He spent the rest of the season with the Brewers as a “hybrid-player coach.” He spent time in the front office, learning as much as he could. If Vogt didn’t know before then that he wanted to be a manager, he knew then.
