Despite only one year of coaching experience, Cleveland saw something special in their new manager.

Vogt was an excellent catcher, a respected clubhouse leader. But has no experience as a major or minor league manager. Vogt is only 39. He retired as a player after the 2022 season.

Then Cash was hired by Tampa Bay with those two years being his only coaching experience. Cash has become one of baseball’s premier managers in small-market Tampa Bay. Cash had losing seasons in his first three years at Tampa Bay.No one knew what to expect when he was hired by the Rays in 2014. Francona had a natural magic, be it with the media, the fans, the front office or his players. He commanded respect without being disrespectful to others. One of the requirements of being a catcher is relating to pitchers, gaining their trust. It’s also game-planing and dealing with the data supplied by the analytics and scouting departments on opposing hitters.

Sandy Alomar is expected to remain with the Guardians and should be a big help to new manager Stephen Vogt.Francona often praised his coaching staff. As the years passed and Francona’s health problems increased, the coaches took some of the daily tasks off his desk. He trusted them to do so. Alomar is a purist. He loves teaching catchers. Think of the work he did over the years with Yan Gomes, Roberto Perez and now Bo Naylor. Alomar also is a superb baserunning coach, putting together reports on how to steal bases off opposing pitchers and catchers.

Vogt also interviewed for the San Francisco job, which went to veteran Bob Melvin. Cleveland was not the only team interested in him.The Guardians pushed hard to hire Craig Counsell, but Cleveland appears to have been third on his list behind staying in Milwaukee or moving on to the New York Mets to work for his old boss David Stearns. But the Guardians were serious in their attempt to make that happen. I heard they were willing to pay him as much as Francona – $4.
