Cal Quantrill, sidelined since July 6 with right shoulder soreness, will return Friday.
Quantrill threw a bullpen session in Minneapolis and is coming off a fine outing in his most recent rehab start for Triple-A Columbus. Quantrill tossed 7 1/3 innings Saturday and struck out six while walking one and allowing two earned runs on five hits against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
Francona said the team elected to start Quantrill Friday in order to give rookie left-hander Logan Allen an extra day of rest between startsA 15-game winner last year, Quantrill proved to be a reliable starter who logged more than 180 innings, but this year has been a different story. Quantrill missed 26 games in June with right shoulder inflammation. He returned June 29 in Chicago and allowed six runs in a 10-1 loss to the Cubs. He was touched for five runs on 11 hits in against Atlanta on July 5 and was placed on the injured list for the second time this season with soreness in the same shoulder the following day.
