The Guardians’ bullpen, unless something unforeseen happens before the season opener on March 30, has been named.
Mike Zunino will start at catcher, but the backup job will be decided among Cam Gallagher, Meibrys Viloria and Zack Collins. Gallagher, Viloria and Collins are in camp on minor league deals.
Francona made it a point to mention Xzavion Curry, who was optioned to Class AAA Columbus on Thursday. Curry and Gaddis, both starters, were pitching for the same job. Curry was sent down to get stretched out so he could protect the big league rotation if an extra starter was needed because of bad weather in April or May.Gaddis said his stomach dropped when he went to Francona’s office to find out if he made the team or not. Gaddis is 6-6 and 250 pounds so that drop is a long way down.
“We want him to get out to 65 to 70 pitches,” said Francona. “That will allow him to get stretched out some and still be available when we start our season.”
