The Guardians have been no-hit five times since 2021.
HOUSTON — Framber Valdez had everything working for the Astros on Tuesday as Houston’s left-handed ace fired a no-hitter against the Guardians in a 2-0 win at Minute Maid Park.
Valdez pitched the 16th no-hitter in Houston franchise history and the first since Christian Javier, Bryan Abreau, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly combined to blank the Phillies in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series. Needing just three outs in the ninth, Valdez retired Gabriel Arias on a ground ball to second base, got Myles Straw to fly out to center field and retired Cam Gallagher on a broken-bat liner to short to end the game.It marked the first no-hitter thrown against Cleveland since Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined for a no-no at Progressive Field on Sept. 11, 2021.
Houston scored a pair of runs in the third inning on an RBI single off Gavin Williams by Kyle Tucker. Williams had allowed a single to Jose Altuve with two out before walking Pena. A wild pitch by Williams moved both runners into scoring position before Tucker’s broken-bat floater to center drove them in for the game’s only runs.
Valdez finished with seven strikeouts and threw just 93 pitches. He became the first left-handed pitcher in Astros history to fire a no-hitter.
