Grand Theft Auto 6 fans still have a long wait ahead of them, and while you keep your fingers crossed that the game doesn't receive another delay, there's a massive fan-created project in the works that will distract you from GTA 6 at least for a little while.

In an exciting new update from The Revolution Team , the team behind GTA Vice City's Nextgen Edition will be porting GTA San Andreas into the GTA 5 engine. Fans of the Vice City Nextgen mod are absolutely ecstatic , though The Revolution Team has offered no specific timeline on the project's release, only stating that it is currently "in progress." GTA San Andreas Is Coming To GTA 5 The Revolution Team, the team behind the extremely popular Vice City Nextgen project, has officially announced their next big undertaking: porting GTA San Andreas into the Grand Theft Auto 5 engine. No timeframe has been announced for the port's release yet, but the Vice City Nextgen Edition took roughly six months to a year from when the team first announced its development. San Andreas is one of the GTA's most beloved and popular entries in the franchise, with an undeniable 95 Metacritic score and almost universal acclaim among players. GTA San Andreas holds a special place in many fans' hearts as being the definitive, quintessential GTA experience. The GTA San Andreas Nextgen Edition promises to modernize one of the most beloved open-world games ever made. While San Andreas remains iconic for its story, characters, and scope, the modern remaster arguably failed to deliver a true"next-gen" experience that fans deserve. The Revolution Team aims to fix that. A GTA San Andreas port into the GTA 5 engine could properly bring one of Rockstar’s most iconic settings and stories into the current era, and offer a glimpse of San Andreas rebuilt to current technical standards. It's Another Stunning Fan Project Fan-created GTA projects like The Revolution Team's San Andreas Nextgen Edition are a beacon of hope at a time when good GTA news is hard to come by. Rockstar has stepped in hot water lately, facing union-busting accusations and multiple GTA 6 delays throughout 2025, and players fear a third delay wouldn't be such a stretch given current events. That hasn't stopped modders from diving into their passion projects, however, and it seems that the GTA community is happy to support these stunning mods and ports, that is as long as Rockstar and/or Take-Two allows them to happen. Some players have raised concerns that it's only a matter of time before either company takes notice of these projects and tries to shut them down one way or another. As of this writing, however, it appears to be full steam ahead for The Revolution Team on the GTA San Andreas Nextgen Edition port to the GTA 5 engine, and you can expect to jump back into an overhauled San Andreas likely sometime next year—possibly even before Grand Theft Auto 6 releases in November 2026 .
