At a climate summit in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and other speakers expressed concern over increasing distrust among major powers hindering global efforts to combat climate change. They highlighted the interconnected nature of crises, with digital technologies spreading climate disinformation and deepening societal divisions.
Speaking at a climate summit in New York before the U.N. General Assembly gets underway, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and several other speakers complained that growing distrust between major powers is getting in the way of climate cooperation.
“International challenges are moving faster than our ability to solve them. Crises are interacting and feeding off each other — for example, as digital technologies spread climate disinformation, that deepens distrust and fuels polarization,” Guterres“The distress in our institutions of governance, the mistrust between the governors and the governed, will continue to foster social alienation the world over at the very time that we need to find as many people as possible to shape a new world,” Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley said at the summit, seconding Guterres’s sentiments. Digital “disinformation” — a label climate activists use very, very broadly — is hardly the only problem facing the climate change movement in the fall of 2024. The turbulent geopolitical situation is a much greater challenge to any form of international cooperation.
