Dr. Amy Acton commenting on the early days of COVID-19: “The hate was real. .. The love was so much greater than the hate.”

former Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Amy Acton, center, makes a point during Inamori Ethics Prize Symposium held at Case Western Reserve University on Thursday. Other panelists are actor and advocate LeVar Burton, left, and Macalester College President and bioethicist Suzanne Rivera.

“I’m strongly considering more public service,” Acton said. “After I’ll answer everybody’s questions.” Along with teaching reading in schools, students need to learn how to tell false information from good information on the internet, Burton said.Macalester College President Suzanne Rivera noted that social inequality in health care can be seen in maternal and infant mortality, gun violence and climate change — all things that disproportionately affect poor and disadvantaged communities.

“We need to be brave enough to confront what is still so unfair in this country,” said Rivera, who previously was the vice president for research and technology management at CWRU.
