Greenville police officer Cooper Dawson died after being shot in the line of duty Monday night.
The Greenville Police Department held a press conference after officer Cooper Dawson was fatally shot on Monday. after he was “ambushed and shot multiple times,” following a traffic stop Monday night, marking the first in-the-line-of-duty death the department has experienced in more than a century, officials said Tuesday.
Police said the suspect was taken to the Hunt County Regional Hospital and last reported to be in critical condition. The department declined to release additional details about the suspect.“We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community,” a visibly emotional Smith said during the news conference.
“It shook me to my core, because that could have been my daughter, that could have been my son-in-law,” she said. “I grieve for the Greenville Police Department and all men and women in Blue when they lose a loved one.”
