Permeable pavement, bioretention areas and vegetative roofs are just some types of green infrastructure that can reduce the amount of stormwater. And all three are examples of projects that the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District might help pay for.

At a recent board meeting, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District agreed to make $1.5 million in grant money available forfor 2023. They will be limited to areas in Cleveland and nine close-in suburbs that have combined sewers. The cost is comparable to typical impervious surfaces made from concrete or asphalt, he said, depending on the location and size of a project. Evidence also shows that pavers or porous concrete, which allows the water to drain through nooks and crannies, can withstand the freezing and thawing that occurs during Northeast Ohio winters, and that the thermal warming that occurs beneath the pavement can even reduce the amount of snow and ice above.
Common vegetation using in bioretention areas are grasses such as sedges or rushes because they are hardy, versatile and easy to maintain. They also regulate temperatures inside the building while reducing the heat island effect that warms the air around it. In addition, they can improve air quality because the plants take in carbon dioxide while “pumping out oxygen into the city core,” Scharver said.on West 29th Street in Ohio City. Water is collected in cisterns on the ground and then pumped up to the wall-mounted plants when it’s dry.
