Perhaps no plants in Northeast Ohio are as rewarding to grow as herbs. Most are perfectly suited to our damp summers and tolerant of our fluctuating temperatures.
Chives are a favorite perennial herb that give a cheery pop of color as soon as spring arrives.CLEVELAND, Ohio --
Not only that, but they offer a lot of bang for the buck—you can spend the same amount on an established plant as you would for a paltry plastic container of wilted stems at the grocery store and be harvesting fresh herbs all summer. Best of all, herbs’ strong flavors deter critters from eating them and they are generally pest-free, so you can grow them wherever you like.in containers. The raised height makes it convenient to snip a few leaves for cooking .
Common biennial herbs are parsley and dill. If you give them a spot where they can overwinter, they will likely come back next spring and give you another year of fresh herbs. If you let them flower and go to seed, there will be future generations of herbs as well. Annuals and biennials are great to tuck into your vegetable garden, where they will help deter pests, or among your annual flowers.
However, once the herb takes over the container, there will be more of it than you can use, as Linda notes. This is one of those nice problems to have and can be solved by harvesting the excess and either drying it or freezing it, either in chopped portions in ice-cube trays or whole clumps for use in winter soups and stews.
Fresh herbs are also great to share with friends and neighbors, muddle in teas and smoothies, and sprinkle on salads. You might be surprised at the new uses you find for herbs—yesterday, one of my kids mixed oregano with wild strawberries and the combination was surprisingly delicious.
