In the last 30 days alone, over 1,600 earthquakes have been detected in Alaska, the largest being a magnitude 5.4, but scientists still have no way of knowing or forecasting when the next earthquake will hit. However, practicing for future quakes helps everyone to be better prepared when the next big one hits.
The day is also an opportunity to make, organize or restock emergency supply kits, secure items susceptible to falling during an earthquake and create disaster plans. Remember — don’t run or evacuate during the shaking.
