ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A State Disaster Declaration has been issued ahead of a possible glacial lake outburst flood that may impact the Juneau area. Governor Mike Dunleavy issued the declaration. And the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said it is in response to “an imminent threat of catastrophic flooding from a glacier lake outburst flood linked to Suicide Basin , a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier.
” Friday, the City and Borough of Juneau and the Central Council of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska issued an emergency disaster declaration. The CBJ said this allows resources to be mobilized ahead of time. According to DHS&EM, the National Weather Service and USGS monitoring shows “the volume of water currently impounded in Suicide Basin has reached or exceeded levels observed during prior flood-of-record events. A release is expected at any time.
