In a press release on Thursday, August 1, the governor announced his veto of five bills.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Several bills passed by the Alaska State Legislature at the end of the legislative session are now on the cutting room floor, following a series of vetoes by Governor Mike Dunleavy.
That night, the House of Representatives continued session into the early hours of the morning in a flurry of activity. The bills deal with a variety of issues, from the registration of commercial vessels, discrimination toward elected officials when providing insurance coverage, and the employment of underage employees at places that serve alcohol.
A few legislators reacted to these vetoes, as reported by Alaska’s News Source, with Wasilla Representative Cathy Tilton saying, “You know, we had legal opinions from both Department of Law and from legislative, legal, and in both cases, you know, there has been precedent where bills have been passed after the night before, and HAVE been fine, but they haven’t been tested.”
