FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Governor Mike Dunleavy was in Fairbanks Monday to sign a series of bills into law.
At an event in the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, the governor gathered with Interior legislators and local politicians to give the final passage to four pieces of legislation which made it through the state house and senate in the last legislative session., sponsored by Representative Will Stapp, aims to strengthen the relationship between the state of Alaska and its military installations by establishing a Military Affairs Commission.
As Alaska’s sizeable timber supply proves vulnerable to pests, wildfire and disease, the legislation is hoped to maintain value of these supplies and send them to market more efficiently. Dunleavy spoke about the potential for the law, using Sweden as an example. “Just an interesting side note. The Swedes, four decades ago in Sweden, same latitude as we are, they embarked upon a civil culture approach to timber and forestry. Instead of just letting it burn or just doing whatever it’s going to do, they actually started to manage it. Last year, they realized approximately 18 billion, with a “B”, $18 billion in forest product sales in Sweden.
