Malacañang did not budge at the appeal of Manila Apostolic Administrator Broderick Pabillo to lift the ban on religious gatherings in areas under the general community quarantine (GCQ), saying the government is just protecting the health of everybody amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his Monday presser, Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said he understands that people already want to go to places of worship but said their health is still the priority.

Roque reiterated the Palace’s earlier appeal to the public to practice their faith from their homes for now. Under the GCQ, only 10 people are allowed in a religious gathering. However, under the modified GCQ, religious events are allowed but only at 50 percent capacity of the venue. “Five persons for such a big church as Baclaran or the Manila Cathedral is laughable! The one-size-fits-all directive is really unreasonable!” Pabillo had said.
