New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed a new bill on March 30, 2026, to eliminate some restrictions for advanced practice nurses.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed a new law on Monday to eliminate some restrictions for advanced practice nurses in the state.-- makes permanent the independent practice authority of some APNs who provide primary or behavioral health care.

The new law also allows APNs who qualify to prescribe medications without the need to collaborate with a physician. "At a time when the health care industry is facing significant workforce shortages and when my Administration is focused on driving down costs to consumers, the last thing we need is more barriers to practicing and accessing health care in New Jersey,” Sherrill said. “From youth mental health services to preventative care, taking action to remove these unneeded administrative barriers will help ensure New Jersey residents have access to the high-quality services that they deserve.”APNs are registered nurses with graduate-level education and clinical training. According to the governor's office, there are currently 27 states that have full practice authority for APNs.
