A candy shop and restaurant that has served generations in Greencastle is preparing to close its doors. After nearly five decades, Mrs. Gibbles Candies and Restaurant will shut down at the end of April—marking the end of an era for a town where nearly everyone has a connection to it.
The decision comes after a heartbreaking loss, close friends say. Owner Rodney Eshleman recently lost his wife and business partner, Kimberly, after her battle with cancer, according to those close to the couple. “She had cancer, and it eventually took her life, unfortunately,” said former employee Ethan Izer. “My mom talked to her up until her final days.” In a town of just over 4,000 people, this wasn’t just a restaurant—it was part of everyday life. Many locals say they’ve either worked there, had family who worked there, or built lasting relationships with the owners. “We’ve been going to the candy shop since we were little,” said family friend Kaitlyn Miller. “My mom worked there 15 years, my grandma 16, and my husband has been making their caramel popcorn for 19 years.” Known for its homemade comfort food and iconic corn fritters, the shop became a gathering place for the community—churchgoers, families, and friends made it part of their routines. “It’s dinner after church,” said Associate Pastor Casey Hurst. “It’s going to feel like something is definitely missing.”“It was time for them to move on, start something new,” Miller said. The building itself has deep roots in Greencastle’s history.
