The governor faced heavy criticism for his decision to attend the event following the massacre. He was scheduled to speak alongside former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, but he will now deliver “pre-recorded video remarks,” Abbott spokesman Mark Miner said. Instead, Abbott will travel to Uvalde for another press conference on “state resources available for those impacted by the Robb Elementary School shooting.” The event will take place at 3:30 p.m., shortly after the governor was set to address NRA attendees.
It will be Abbott’s second news conference in Uvalde after Tuesday’s shooting. During the first on Wednesday, AbbottDemocratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke also , pointing at Abbott as he said: “This is on you.” O’Rourke plans to join a horde of Texans in Houston on Friday for a planned protest outside the NRA convention.
