Gotham FC’s Sunday evening match against Orlando Pride finished with a familiar outcome — a scoreless draw.

The Bats didn’t score a single goal across its three-game homestand, ending with a 0-1-2 record. The sentiment among the players is that they know the lack of scoring is an issue, but they’re satisfied with the steps forward that the team is taking.

The lack of scoring isn’t a new issue for the team. Gotham also went through ups and downs with scoring consistency last season, but won the NWSL championship anyway as the No. 8 seed. Star midfielder Rose Lavelle said the team sticks together when it comes to solving problems and is generally an “honest” group. “It’s frustrating because it feels like it’s kind of the same thing happening,” Lavelle said. “But we hold ourselves accountable. We know it needs to be better, and we do it together.”In a midweek matchup, Gotham FC gave expansion side Denver Summit its first-ever NWSL win, losing 2-0. The team looked disjointed then, but feels that it has improved its decision-making and control of the ball against Orlando. Against Denver, the Bats had possession 50.3% of the time, while against Orlando, it had possession 60.7% of the time. But the ball control didn’t necessarily translate to scoring opportunities — against Denver, the team took four shots on goal compared to two against Orlando. “I think we were a lot more recognizable on and off the ball in terms of who we are,” said head coach Juan Carlos Amoròs. “It was an important game for us to find ourselves again.” The team is still without Jaedyn Shaw . Amoròs said she’s “doing well” and is still working with the medical team to be fully ready to go. A bright spot for the Bats has been the defense — goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger pulled in her third clean sheet in four games and notched four saves. “We’ve seen a lot of improvements in our control of the ball, decision making, and defensive structure. Those were things we wanted to improve,” said defender Tierna Davidson.Next, Gotham FC will travel to Kansas City to play the Current for the first time since the two teams met in the first round of the playoffs.
