Google is bolstering its Play Store security by automatically revoking permissions for potentially harmful apps and strengthening Play Integrity features to combat scams and fraud.
Google is taking significant steps to enhance the security of its Play Store and protect users from potentially harmful apps. The company has been actively removing malicious apps and developers, having taken action against over 2 million harmful apps and 150,000 bad developers last year. However, a recent change could be even more impactful.
In a blog post, Google revealed that even its most popular apps often exhibit vulnerabilities, seeking unnecessary permissions, displaying security weaknesses, and failing to adhere to basic privacy standards, potentially putting users at risk.To address this issue, Google Play Protect will now automatically revoke permissions for potentially harmful apps, limiting their access to sensitive data like storage, photos, and the camera. While users can restore these permissions, they will need to override a security warning, ensuring a higher level of protection. Furthermore, Google is implementing measures to combat scams and fraud within Android apps. Play Integrity features, already in use by many developers, significantly reduce the utilization of apps from unverified and untrusted sources. Starting next month, Google will also differentiate between devices and OS versions, allowing developers to restrict app functionality to specific Android versions, such as Android 13 or newer. This will help ensure that users have access to the most secure and up-to-date versions of apps
