The pandemic left the family-owned Chinese restaurant struggling to stay afloat.The swanky downtown Indy soul food restaurant and jazz lounge, opened in 2018, opted to not renew its lease and was renting month-to-month as its building's owner sought a buyer.
Michael's Soul Kitchen introduced a menu of classic southern and creole cuisines, including fried and barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, gumbo and shrimp étouffée. Its buffet took off in a setting of red, brass and cherry wood decor, cushy couches and a grand piano with live musical performances.In the pandemic, Connie Oates-Allen operated Michael’s with a model of private events and pre-paid admissions.
A large portion of Michael's menu continues, however, now served as Sunday brunch at Miami's Garden. Miami's Garden is a tropical-themed event space and restaurant that Oates-Allen and partner Romeo Gerson opened at3037 Lafayette Road, IndianapolisAs a private chef, Jasmine West cooked for some of Indianapolis’ most-watched athletes before opening her Eagledale restaurant in 2020.
Next Door American Eatery opened in 2018 in a former Double 8 Foods store location to serve quick farm-to-table dishes for lunch and dinner. It closed in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and reopened in July 2021 with a focus on globally inspired street food, a new weekend brunch menu, house-made drinks and a new eclectic dining room. Next Door changed its name to ND streetBAR in February.
Its parent company, Boulder, Colorado-based Kitchen Restaurant Group, also has apparently permanently closed Hedge Row American Bistro at 350 Massachusetts Ave. in Indianapolis, which shut in July 2020.
