Recent gold-standard studies of antidepressant withdrawal flag misdiagnosis, confounding, and rushed tapering as ongoing concerns.
Each year, the global consumption of psychiatric drugs increases roughly 4 percent, led by antidepressant use.
Commenting on recent studies such as “Acute and persistent withdrawal syndromes following discontinuation” , Horowitz and Davies cite the example of a high-functioning patient who, “after stopping an SSRI over 4 weeks under medical supervision, developed severe withdrawal symptoms, including panic attacks, brain 'zaps,'“Many patients exhibiting typical withdrawal symptoms are misdiagnosed due to reliance on inaccurate guidelines or diagnostic tools,” Horowitz and Davies warn.
Prescribing data nonetheless show that “most patients take antidepressants for much longer than the 8–12 weeks covered by such trials.” For instance, half of them in the United Kingdom and 70 percent in the United States have been taking them for more than 2 years. “As longer use is linked with more frequent and severe withdrawal effects,” Horowitz and Davies note of recently confirming findings, “data from short-term studies can significantly mislead guidelines.
Although the global consumption of psychiatric medication “continues to increase by 4 percent annually, with the greatest increase observed in antidepressant use,” Boland and colleagues underline the widening mismatch, “those prescribed them widely report a lack of reliable information, resources, and specialists in their efforts at tapering safely.”
