The annual event raises awareness about cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. The luncheon also raises money for critical research and encourages women to undergo regular cardiovascular screenings. "Today is all about spreading awareness, so we really want to show women that heart disease is the number one killer," said Megan Vargulick, executive director of the American Heart Association of Rochester-Buffalo. "Not every woman realizes that. We may present differently. Heart attack symptoms are different; stroke symptoms are very prevalent in women. So we just want to make sure everyone's aware and takes charge of their own health.
