Franklin Township officials are expected to give an update on the brush fire later on Thursday.

The blaze grew to 150 acres Wednesday night, but officials added that it was 50% contained.Fire crews are making progress in containing a wildfire in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The blaze grew to 150 acres Wednesday night.

New Jersey forest fire officials say a wildfire is considered "major" after it exceeds 100 acres. It's definitely dry and that's certainly a factor when it comes to dealing with these fires," said Chief Bill Donnelly, from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. Firefighters in New Jersey are now in day two of working to contain the fire. An incident command post has been established at Janvier Elementary School. Chopper 6 was overhead as crews were seen performing backfire operations to protect homes in the area. Officials say the flames threatened 60 homes at its height on Wednesday nightt, but that number has been greatly reduced and say all shelter in place orders are now lifted. "As of right now they're still considered threatened, but we don't feel as if any evacuations are necessary, and everybody has been asked to just shelter in place," said Franklin Township Police Chief Matt Decesari.Due to the rough terrain, firefighters say they weren't able to get close to the fire, so they created containment lines behind several homes."We're in coordination with our county office of emergency management and also our partners with the county highway, who brought out some road barriers just in case we need to close roads tonight," said Decesari. Action News has been told that local firefighters are using a number of tactics to keep the fire from moving into neighbors. They said firefighters have been very busy since late last year and say the state can really use more rain as dry conditions continue to fuel one fire after another. "Our numbers are just off the charts again as far as the amount of fires. I think we're 4-5 times the amount of fires this time from January 1st this year as we were last year," said Decesari. They're holding the fire off right now, and at daylight, plan to send investigators out to determine the cause.Copyright © 2025 WPVI-TV.
