Denzel Washington's Macrinus squatting and smiling smugly in Gladiator 2
Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Gladiator II!Gladiator II director Ridley Scott discusses the fate of Macrinus at the end of the movie, and the thematic connections to the rest of the movie. In the film, Macrinus, played by two-time Oscar-winner and longtime Scott collaborator Denzel Washington, is the charismatic and wealthy trader, who has designs on reshaping the political landscape of Rome, and keeps a stable of gladiators, including lead character Lucius.
I think he earned the right to die that way. 100 percent. What a bad guy. He still had a little bit of the gladiator in him, and was a good warrior. You see that come out with Paul’s character, he fights dirty... One of them had to die. Gladiator II marks Scott's second collaboration with Washington, following 2007's American Gangster .
