Ridley Scott’s epic exploration into the Roman Empire continues with Gladiator II. The long-awaited sequel hits theaters 24 years after Gladiator dominated the 2000 box office with its story about a general forced to fight in the Colosseum as a gladiator. The sequel stars Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus, the grown-up version of the child played by Spencer Treat Clark in the first film.
13 Screen Rant interviewed Denzel Washington about his work on Gladiator II. Washington reflected on the character of Macrinus and working with Ridley Scott once more. Washington also revealed his feelings on shooting a film in a recreated version of Ancient Rome that, despite criticisms of Gladiator II’s historical accuracy, made it easy for the actor to embody his character.
I find this character so fascinating. How does Macrinus’ ambition and control of the emperor reflect on modern day business moguls, and did you draw from any parallels while preparing for the role? I feel like there are a lot of modern-day business moguls that have political ambitions. They're in the ear of some of these bigger players in politics, and I feel like Macrinus is kind of on that same journey a little bit.

It’s called Gladiator, it's not called Macrinus, so the focus wasn't on me. I just needed to make sure I was present and doing what I'm supposed to do, what I'm paid to do as an actor, and that's what I did. I think that Ridley's one of the all-time greats and anytime he calls, I'll be there.
