Gilberto Hinojosa resigns as Texas Democratic Party chairman after dismal election results.
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa speaks to delegates and guests during the kickoff reception for the 2022 Texas Democratic Convention at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, July 14, 2022.Democrats had hoped to make strides in their quest to be more competitive in Texas, perhaps turning the state purple — or even blue.
“We’re not playing in the garden of Eden here,” he said. “Texas was like the ATM machine for the national political operations. There was no investment in this state.”His high point was 2018, when a ticket led by Beto O’Rourke resulted in Democrats gaining 12 seats in the Texas House. O’Rourke lost his Senate race to Ted Cruz by only 2.6 percentage points.
After 2018, Hinojosa and the party failed to meet the expectations of many Democrats and donors, including a 2020 election that saw Republicans hold their majorities in the Texas House and Senate along with Sen. John Cornyn’s victory over Democrat MJ Hegar.Hinojosa was reelected to a four-year term in 2022 despite the disappointing 2020 election, though there was speculation former state Sen. Wendy Davis would seek the job. She opted against a challenge to lead the party.
