Grading NFL Draft picks right after they are made is silly. Let’s do it anyway.
Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter puts on a hat after being chosen by the New York Giants with the third overall pick during the first round of the NFL football draft, Thursday, April 24, 2025, in Green Bay, Wis.
Here’s how we grade those picks — with the caveat that assessments can change once a player actually begins playing in NFL games:went second to the Jaguars, who pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Browns. This is a weak quarterback draft. Reaching on a non-Cam Ward quarterback like Shedeur Sanders or even Dart at No. 3 made no sense. Yes, the Giants already have Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux at edge rusher. But it’s not like Thibodeaux has proven himself as a consistent star.? Who really knows? But Schoen badly needed at least a potential quarterback of the future in this draft. And he went with Dart, while parting with those two third-rounders — one of which is a borderline fourth-rounder .last year. He passed on them all. So Dart will be compared to all of these guys in the years to come. And yes, it’ll be at least a couple years before this all shakes out. The Giants badly needed to upgrade their awful run defense and find a long-term solution at the tackle spot next to Dexter Lawrence. Is Alexander that solution? It would be foolish to say he absolutely is. But you can’t fault Joe Schoen for addressing a glaring need with the best interior defensive lineman on the board at No. 65. The pick certainly makes sense, especially given how brutal the Giants’ run defense was last season — and the obvious reality that Rakeem Nunez-Roches hasn’t played well through two seasons with the Giants. No, Alexander isn’t a splashy pick like Carter. But Alexander could wind up being an important pick in 2025, as defensive coordinator Shane Bowen tries to finally stop the run. Schoen picked a running back with legit star potential in Round 4. Arguably the toughest player in the 2025 NFL Draft class, Skattebo is a physical beast who single-handedly carried ASU to their first Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff appearance last season. He posted 1,711 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 293 attempts. He was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and first-team All-American after transferring from Sacramento State. He’s not the quickest back, so we’ll see how his game translates to the pros, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better resume for a Round 4 prospect. He’ll compete with Tyrone Tracy Jr. for the starting job immediately.got the best player available here. Mbow, a 6-foot-4, 304 pound lineman, is a violent blocker who seeks out contact. He might challenge for the starting right guard gig right away. Veteranisn’t winning the job either . Mbow, who is versatile with 32 career starts split between right guard and right tackle , might just be their best option.Fidone is a project tight end who needs to add weight. If he can do that, he’ll live up to what the scouting reports call him — “a willing blocker. Fine add in the seventh round.Black has size and decent explosiveness, but needs to play with more anticipation if he wants to succeed at the NFL level. He has the tools to be a special teamers.Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
