The San Francisco Giants have acquired former top catching prospect Sam Huff from the Texas Rangers. Huff, who has struggled to find consistent playing time in the majors, will look for a fresh start with the Giants.

Sam Huff , a former top catching prospect, was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants . Huff, 26, was designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers in December. He was once ranked among the top 100 prospects in baseball but his opportunities with the Rangers have dwindled since his debut four years ago. He played in just three games in two stints with Texas this past season and would've been a third-string catcher at best following the addition of.

The Rangers selected Huff in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB draft. He made his major league debut in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and was the second-ranked prospect in Texas' organization behind third baseman Josh Jung prior to the 2021 campaign. Huff had an .813 on base plus slugging percentage or better in five of his first eight minor league seasons. However, it didn't translate to consistent at bats in the major leagues, and Huff played in just a combined 24 games between the 2023-24 seasons in spot moments behind starter Jonah Heim and company.
