Monty, a giant schnauzer, wins the prestigious Best in Show title at the 2025 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, ending the Working Group's 21-year championship drought.

After days of spirited performances, Monty , a coal-black giant schnauzer, achieved canine stardom by winning the Best in Show title at the 2025 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show . This victory marked the end of a 21-year championship drought for the Working Group, the longest of any group at Westminster. Monty , a 5-year-old from Connecticut, had already claimed the Working Group title for a third consecutive year just prior to his Best in Show triumph.

His handler, Katie Bernardin, a veteran of the Westminster arena herself (she won the junior handler competition at 18), was visibly moved by the win, acknowledging it was likely their last run together as Monty will now retire to a life of leisure and steak dinners. The Best in Show win came after a thrilling three days of competition, which saw Monty compete against a diverse range of breeds, including the ever-popular golden retrievers and the elusive Dandie Dinmont terrier. While the golden retriever, Tuffy, a fan favorite, failed to capture the coveted top prize, other notable contenders included Bourbon, a 9½-year-old whippet who had made a triumphant return to competition after a distinguished career, and Mercedes, a 5-year-old German shepherd who had placed second in the previous year's Best in Show competition. The show marked Westminster's exuberant return to its longtime home in Madison Square Garden after four years spent at various locations due to the pandemic. The Empire State Building and the Garden illuminated in the show's signature purple and gold to celebrate the occasion.Beyond the Best in Show title, the weekend showcased a variety of canine talents, including agility, dock diving, and obedience competitions. Notable among these was Vanish, the border collie who claimed victory in the Masters Agility contest. Westminster 2025 celebrated both the familiar and the unexpected, highlighting the incredible diversity within the world of dogs
