'Use a penny, stick it into the tread, and if you can see Lincoln's head disappear, that tread is good. If it doesn't disappear, you need new tires,' he explains. An average tire can cost between $150 to $200, but Cohen points out that replacement isn't always necessary every year. When it comes to car maintenance, knowledge is power. While Cohen recommends having a reliable auto shop on call, he stresses that many simple fixes can be handled at home, saving you money in the long run.
