The community of Winder, Georgia, is reeling after four people were fatally shot and nine others were injured by a 14-year-old at Apalachee High School. The FBI says it received several anonymous tips about an online threat to commit a school shooting in 2023. NBC’s Priya Sridhar reports for TODAY.
, who used an AR-style weapon in the shooting, surrendered immediately and will be charged as an adult, law enforcement officials said. He was taken into custody within minutes.
“There was blood everywhere. You smell the smell the gunpowder. A lot of screaming, yelling, little bit of chaos.” “Emotionally, it’s hard because I feel like this, that Colt Gray moved here, he took advantage of the system and thought that he could get away with it and didn’t. But he is an evil person that took out some people. But like I said, love is going to prevail over what happened, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that happens,” Smith said.The suspected shooter was a brand new student, and yesterday was his first"real day" of class, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said.
“We got multiple notifications as the shooting was going on from the teachers where to respond in that general area,” Smith said.“They come around the hallway — they were armed, obviously he was — they interacted with him, they gave him verbal commands, he dropped the gun and went on the ground and they took him into custody immediately. They’re telling me within six minutes of the first Centegix hit that he was in custody by that time,” Smith said.
Included in the tip were several photo attachments that showed a user profile name written in Russian — which when translated spelled the name Lanza, referring to the Sandy Hook elementary school shooter.
