An undercover FBI informant led to the arrest of a George Mason University student, identified as Hassan, who allegedly planned a terrorist attack on the New York City Jewish community. Hassan was arrested by the FBI 's Washington Field Office's Joint Terrorism Task Force on Tuesday. He faces federal charges for plotting to manufacture explosives with the intent to murder internationally protected persons.
According to authorities, Hassan referred to the consulate as a 'goldmine of targets' for such violent terrorist attacks. He shared radical Islamic jihadist propaganda, including a video on how to kill Jewish people, and provided detailed instructions to an undercover FBI informant on how to join ISIS. Hassan also sent bomb-making instructions to the informant, recommending the use of 30 mm aluminum ball bearings for shrapnel to cause extra harm. He encouraged the informant to 'livestream the attack' so he could 'share with ISIS.' The FBI released a statement assuring New York's Jewish community of their diligent work to protect them from threats. George Mason University President Gregory Washington also issued a statement, detailing the university's security efforts and confirming that Hassan was prohibited from being on GMU's campus. Washington stated that the university would take appropriate action on student code of conduct violations as the criminal proceedings progress
