These arrests have sparked mixed reaction, including a truck saying “Expel them now” spotted off campus in College Town.

Supporters of four University of Rochester students charged with criminal mischief following the discovery of "wanted" posters on campus surround them outside the Hall of Justice following their arraignment Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024. Rochester, N.Y — Four University of Rochester students were arrested and are facing felony charges for allegedly plastering posters that targeted some Jewish faculty member across the River Campus. A fifth individual is being investigated as well.

Charlie Herman is a Jewish student at the University of Rochester. He said while arresting the students may have been unnecessary, he agrees that they should be penalized. Joy Getnick leads the university’s Hillel organization, a center for Jewish life on campus. She told 13WHAM in an interview on Nov. 13 that she was depicted on the “wanted” posters and accused of racism, hate speech, and intimidation. We appreciate the University and law enforcement’s quick and thorough investigation into the “Wanted” posters that targeted our Hillel director, Jewish faculty and staff, and university administrators.

"I can say it's bias,” Herman said. “I can say that sometimes, often times false accusations on the posters are accusatory. What bothers me is when you start accusing people of things they didn’t do because they happen to be Jewish, and that’s where it crosses the line.
