Out of 67 county school districts in the state, Geneva County outscored the rest with a 93.
GENEVA COUNTY, Ala. - Geneva County Schools beat out every other county school district in the state for the highest report card score.“When we first got our scores online, we were ecstatic because we know how hard our teachers and our administrators and our students have worked,” Superintendent of Geneva County Schools Becky Birdsong said.
Their score went up from 91 last year and 89 the year before. The report card scores are based on six categories, including graduation rate, chronic absenteeism and progress in English Language proficiency.Birdsong said that’s thanks to two new online programs and an English Language teacher for the county.
“We do have a lot of new kids moving in who don’t speak English and so that’s a challenge, but we’ve seen huge growth in that this year,” Birdsong explained.“To me, having good leaders in the schools who understand the system and what the grade is based on and what it takes for students to learn” Birdsong said.
To celebrate all of their school’s successes, Birdsong presented each school with their report card score along with another treat. “Our teachers did not know their scores until then,” Birdsong said. “We went around and announced their scores and gave them a check, a bonus, for the hard work and they were so excited and so humbled.”“Geneva County is a rural school system that doesn’t have a lot of resources and you know, when you think about systems that are more affluent and have more resources, it just goes back to the commitment of our teachers and our leaders and our kids,” Birdsong said.
