The X Skorpio signals Genesis’ interest in off-roading—and the concept sounds incredible. There’s a powerful V-8 at its heart, and much more.

The scene plays out like a Range Rover ad: A Genesis slides around the sand dunes looking tough, confident, and capable. We’ve seen this type of image-building from a brand before, but there’s one enormous difference you’re gonna love: The Genesis X Skorpio is a mean-looking concept car with a 1,100-hp V-8 engine.

Trust us when we say this beast is as much fun to hear roaring across the desert as it is to watch ripping over the sand.might one day offer a credible alternative to high-priced luxury SUVs with off-road cred, including the Lexus GX and Range Rover., a concept previewing a G-Wagen rival coming in 2028. The luxury brand is only a decade old, so there’s plenty of time to evolve and expand what it stands for. Off-roading subbrands are almost everywhere, including Volvo’s Cross Country, Lexus’ Overtrail, and Jeep’s well, everything. That makes Genesis late to this party, but don’t count out the brand just yet. “Everything has been done already,” Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis Chief Creative and Design Officer, said in an interview. Maybe it’s still possible to make a dent with unique design. Adds Donckerwolke, “You don’t want to work in a place that has limited ambitions,” and Genesis has certainly dreamed big.-road sportiness with luxury. There’s no guarantee the luxury brand will find similar success with off-road trims of existing models or with a new model targeting that crowd. That brings us back to the sand dunes and the Genesis X Skorpio concept resculpting them. This thing, along with the GV60 and GV70 Outdoors concepts, previews what Genesis thinks it can offer in this space. If this isn’t your cup of tea, there’s always Genesis’ still-fresh Magma track-focused performance subbrand. Between those two subbrands and the upcoming GV90 three-row electric SUV, Genesis sure is busy. Is it an apples to oranges comparison to match the iconic Ford F-150 Raptor R to a concept car? Yes, but throw logic out the window when discussing 1,100-hp V-8 Dakar-ready concepts from a luxury brand known for, well, none of those things. Said to be inspired by the resilience of the black scorpion, the X Skorpio is the result of what Genesis says was a thorough development process to make sure this beast can put its money where its Genesis-family front fascia is.Tubular frame, four-point harness system, and full rollcageThis being a luxury concept, the X Skorpio also has suede as well as leather with stitching that Genesis promises is inspired by the segmented legs of a scorpion. The overall effect is entertaining but also disconnected from most of what the accomplished young luxury brand is known for in the U.S., even when considering the newly debuted GV60 and GV70 Outdoors models that are for now only concepts. The real challenge begins if and when an off-roading model enters the Genesis lineup. Once that happens, we’ll be waiting to do what we do best and actually test it. By the way, it’s not written anywhere that a luxury brand producing solid stuff needs this. Just look at the Lincoln Nautilus, an SUV of the Year winner that excels because of its single-minded luxury focus. Think of the X Skorpio as a 1,100-hp V-8-powered middle finger to that approach. Given the Middle East’s love of off-roading, we get why Genesis chose this part of the world to showcase what it’s been working on. Oh, and guess what: Genesis might actually build a few of these not-street-legal X Skorpios for ultra-rich Middle East buyers. For everyone else, hopefully not too long will pass before compelling outdoors-themed Genesis models arrive to build on the X Skorpio’s momentum.Get the newest car reviews, hottest auto news, and expert analysis of the latest trends delivered straight to your inbox!I’ve come a long way since I drove sugar packets across restaurant tables as a kid, pretending they were cars. With more than 17 years of experience, I'm passionate about demystifying the new car market for shoppers and enthusiasts. My expertise comes from thoughtfully reviewing countless vehicles across the automotive spectrum. The greatest thrill I get isn’t just from behind the wheel of an exotic car but from a well-executed car that’s affordable, entertaining, and well-made. Since about the time I learned to walk I’ve been fascinated by cars of all shapes and sizes, but it wasn’t until I struggled through a summer high school class at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design that I realized writing was my ticket into the automotive industry. My drive to high school was magical, taking me through a beautiful and winding canyon; I've never lost the excited feeling some 16-year-olds get when they first set out on the road. The automotive industry, singing, and writing have always been my passions, but because no one seeks a writer who sings about the automotive industry, I honed my writing and editing skills at UC Irvine , serving as an editor of the official campus newspaper and writing stories as a literary journalism major. At USC, I developed a much greater appreciation for broadcast journalists and became acquainted with copy editing rules such as why the Oxford comma is so important. Though my beloved 1996 Audi A4 didn’t survive my college years, my career with MotorTrend did. I started at the company in 2007 building articles for motorcycle magazines, soon transitioning to writing news posts for MotorTrend’s budding online department. I spent some valuable time in the copy editing department, as an online news director, and as a senior production editor. Today, MotorTrend keeps me busy as the Buyer's Guide Director. Not everyone has a career centered on one of their passions, and I remind myself all the time how lucky I am.
