The Aggies have outscored their last two opponents in the state championship game 121-6.
The Aggies’ rare blend of talented stars showed out on the biggest stage one more time Friday before heading off in separate directions to start their college careers. EJ Crowell, Landon Duckworth, Keeyun Chapman and a host of other standouts have made Class 4A a playground for the past two years.
The Jackson seniors put an exclamation point on their careers Friday, pounding a previously unbeaten Anniston team 52-0 to win their second straight state title. “This is a culmination for this group,” Flournoy said. “When I took the job seven years ago, we looked at this group in the recreation league and said, ‘That is the group that is going to win a championship.’ We got two.”“I am a football fan,” Flournoy said. “I love watching these guys.”By the end of the third quarter, it was 52-0., finished with 304 yards and 5 touchdowns on 25 carries. His scores came on runs of 2, 1, 56, 56 and 47 yards. However, Crowell isn’t the only Jackson player who belongs in that conversation. Quarterback Landon Duckworth, who signed with South Carolina on Thursday, went 6-for-6 for 75 yards and a TD. North Carolina signee Keeyun “Red” Chapman returned a punt 79 yards for a score and – as he did last year – caught a touchdown pass from Duckworth seconds before halftime.“I thought about that catch from last year and thought I needed to do it again,” said Chapman, who missed most of the regular season due to injury. “It’s really fun catching balls over people and standing over them.” The Jackson defense did its part as well, limiting Anniston to 124 yards of total offense on 58 plays. The Bulldogs were 4-of-14 on third down. Senior Laquon Whisenhunt had 14 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. Senior JiQuell Armstrong and junior Victor Darrington each had interceptions. “When they get into the big moments, the guys rise to the occasion,” Flournoy said. “That is why they are signing to play college football. They have that type of mindset. When the games get big, they don’t waver. They just play.”Alabama football signee wins top Gatorade awardBen Thomas is the high school managing producer for AL.com, responsible for prep coverage throughout the state of Alabama.
