The Geauga County Dog Shelter will be closed for two weeks after a stray dog tested positive for canine distemper. As a precautionary measure, four dogs are under observation and stray dogs will be housed at a separate location.
Geauga County Dog Warden Matt Granito announced on Tuesday that a stray dog at the shelter tested positive for distemper. As a precautionary measure, the shelter will be closed for two weeks. Granito stated that four dogs at the shelter are currently under observation to monitor for signs of infection. Canine distemper, according to the American Veterinary Association, is a highly contagious and serious disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs.
While the shelter is closed, it will continue to fulfill its statutory obligations and respond to complaints. Stray dogs will be housed at a separate location, although the specific site is still being determined. Granito emphasized the importance of pet owners keeping their dogs confined and preventing them from roaming freely, as the shelter's capacity to accept additional animals is currently restricted. This news comes after Geauga County residents united in support of the dog shelter and warden in December 2024 when there were discussions about the sheriff's office assuming control. This past incident highlighted the community's strong commitment to the well-being of its animals and the vital role played by the dog warden in ensuring their safety
