China has launched the first batch of satellites for its 'Thousand Sails Constellation,' a direct challenge to SpaceX's Starlink.

Shanghai Space com Satellite Technology , a state-owned company in China, achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching the first batch of satellites.

A group of satellites was deployed as a component of a large constellation intended to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink in providing a near-global internet network. This initiative is part of SSST’s “Thousand Sails Constellation” plan, also known as the “G60 Starlink Plan”, which was initiated last year and aims to deploy more than 15,000 low Earth orbit satellites. The “Thousand Sails Constellation” project plans to launch 108 satellites this year and deploy 648 satellites by the end of 2025.

Beijing’s recent launch represents a significant milestone in its strategic initiative to establish a satellite broadband network similar to Starlink.Elon Musk’s SpaceX operates Starlink, which currently has approximately 5,500 satellites in orbit and provides internet services to tens of thousands of users in the United States. Starlink has ambitious plans to expand its satellite network shortly.

An opinion piece in a publication associated with the People’s Liberation Army characterized the deployment of Starlink as a significant concern for the security of space assets belonging to different nations.
