Baseball always gives a player a second chance.
Guardians' Steven Kwan slides safely into home plate as Detroit Tigers catcher Carson Kelly drops the throw in the 10th inning Tuesday night. Kwan scored on Brayan Rocchio's sacrifice fly to left field.
DETROIT -- There is no such thing as the Last Chance Saloon in baseball. Players, if they’re talented enough and engaged enough, always get a second chance. This is a black-and-white rule put forth not by the teams that employ players, but by the game itself. Baseball is a nine-inning drama featuring a never ending loop of failure and redemption.Guardians make Detroit pay for intentionally walking José Ramírez Rookie shortstop Brayan Rocchio made an error on Monday night against the Tigers. Errors happens all the time, but this error allowed the only run of the game to score in the Guardians’ 1-0 loss at Comerica Park.Rocchio returned to the team hotel Monday night and chewed on that error for a while.“If was thinking, ‘If I get into this game, I hope I have a good at-bat to help us win,’” said Rocchio. Rocchio entered Tuesday night’s game in the eighth inning at shortstop after Daniel Schneemann, who started the game at short, moved to right field. The Guardians at one time held a 6-0 lead, but when Rocchie entered the game the score was tied, 7-7. It stayed that way through nine innings before Josh Naylor, with one out and the bases loaded, singled to center field to score his brother Bo for a 8-7 lead. In the era of the automatic runner on second base when a game reaches extra inning, one run for the visiting team means little because the home team is going to get the same opportunity to score in the bottom of the inning. It means the visiting team’s ability to score multiple runs in extra innings is vital. Guess who had that chance in the 10th inning Tuesday night at Comerica Park?Rocchio followed Naylor to the plate. The bases were still loaded with Stephen Kwan at third, Jose Ramirez at second and Josh Naylor at first. Right-hander Will Vest, in his second inning of work, was on the mound. Vest and Rocchio dueled through five pitches. The count was 2-2 when the Tiger right-hander threw a 96 mph fastball right down the middle. Rocchio hit it in the air to left field. It wasn’t that deep, but it was deep enough to score Kwan for a 9-7 lead on a close play that saw catcher Carson Kelly drop Riley Greene’s throw from left field. It proved to be the game-winning run because the Tigers scored in the bottom of the 10th before Emmanuel Clase saved his 28th game. “It was awesome for me,” said Rocchio. “After what happened on Monday, I got another opportunity to bring home the winning run on Tuesday. That’s what we play for.”“To be honest, I just hit the ball and waited to see what happened,” he said.Rocchio said he dissected Monday’s error and put it behind him. “I just turned the page,” he said. “It happened. Nobody wants to make a mistake that lets your team lose. I’m trying to do my best and help the team when I can.” Rocchio is hitting .218 with 13 doubles, three homers and 17 RBI. He’s played in 79 of the Guardians 91 games after winning the shortstop job in spring training over Gabriel Arias. “We’ve challenged Rocchio a lot this year,” said Vogt. “What he’s done. . .playing shortstop every day at 23 is not easy. He’s had his struggles, and at times we’ve seen where he hasn’t managed his at-bats well. “But he’s working on it. He’s learning for the first time what it’s like to have a plan for every single at-bat. That’s not easy for anyone, let alone while you’re playing one of the toughest positions on the field.”If you or a loved one has questions and needs to talk to a professional about gambling, call the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-589-9966 or the National Council on Program Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700 or visitIf you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
