Jaguars and Rattlers aim to keep pace with Brandeis in District 28-6A.
SAN ANTONIO — Far North Side rivals Johnson and Reagan get the Saturday night spotlight as the Express-News Game of the Week. Both are chasing Brandeis for the District 28-6A championship.Johnson vs. Reagan, 7 p.m. Saturday, Comalander StadiumThe Jaguars escaped with a 31-28 victory over Clark last week thanks to Harrison Stone’s 19-yard field goal with four seconds remaining.
Sophomore quarterback Ty Hawkins rushed for 139 yards and one touchdown and passed for 150 yards and two scores. Besides catching a TD pass, senior receiver Alejandro Tavarez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score. Those key plays helped the Jaguars hold on to third place in District 28-6A. They are a game behind Brandeis and Reagan in the loss column.Reagan rolled over Madison 52-10 last week. Senior running back Carson Green appears to be returning to the form that made him one of the area’s top rushers before he injured his leg last season. The fourth-year starter rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries last week. He has 605 yards and 13 scores on 71 carries for the season.
The Rattlers have outscored district opponents Clark, Marshall, LEE and Madison by a total of 176-37.The Rattlers and Jaguars have one common opponent — Clark. Reagan defeated the Cougars 35-10 and Johnson prevailed 31-28. A year ago, the Jaguars beat the Rattlers 46-43 in overtime on a 43-yard field goal from Stone. Johnson tied the game at 43 when Hawkins, then playing receiver, threw to Tavarez on a reverse pass to complete a 2-point conversion with 40 seconds left in regulation
