A Galveston County judge Monday was removed from the long-delayed trial of the accused Santa Fe High School shooter after complaints he had a conflict of interest that should prevent him from presiding over the trial.

Administrative Judge Susan Brown presides over a hearing on the motions of recusal and disqualification against 122nd District Court Judge Jeth Jones on the case of accused Santa Fe High School shooter Dimitrios Pagourtzis on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at the Galveston County Courthouse.

Galveston County 122nd District Court Judge Jeth Jones was disqualified from the trial by 11th Administrative Judicial Region Judge Susan Brown, according to the Galveston County District Atttorney's Office. Brown' decisionJones will be replaced by Galveston County 56th District Court Judge Lonnie Cox.

In a statement, Galveston County District Attorney Jack Roady said Cox was known for making decisive and fair rulings. "Our office is disappointed to lose Judge Jones, but we believe that Judge Cox will handle the case fairly and efficiently," Roady said. Pagourtzis is accused of killing 10 people and wounding 13 others in the May 18, 2018 shooting at Santa Fe High School. He was arrested inside the high school on the day of the shooting. His trial has been delayed following a 2019 ruling that he was mentally unfit to aid in his own defense. He is currently under treatment at a North Texas state hospital.
