The Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police has slammed the Greens after the minor party demanded an independent inquiry into the 'excessive force' used by officers during a violent protest in Melbourne.

Police said they had to use"various tactical options, including foam baton rounds, flash distraction devices, and PAVA powder to respond to those committing offences and to deter further offending".
