The Pecan Grove Store attracts tourists and daytrippers from San Antonio and Austin to hear Hill Country bands, glamp, see motorcycles and eat Dino Burgers.
The premise: A pair of musicians hitchhiking to their next gig at the Pecan Grove Store get a ride from a driver in a classic convertible.
It’s that kind of Hill Country hospitality that has gained the Pecan Grove Store, located at 5244 N. State Highway 16, a reputation among area musicians as a classic Texas roadhouse that’s a friendly place to play. The diner, which is also part dance hall, glampground and motorcycle museum, attracts plenty of tourists, including bluebonnet peepers, spring breakers, motorcyclists and daytrippers from. Locals come, too, but they tend to wait for bad weather when there’ll be fewer tourists.
“Lawrence played accordion, so he also built a beer garden and dance floor out back where they’d hold weekend dances,” said Rick, who lived in Fredericksburg during the late ’70s and has fond memories of the place. "The only thing they asked is that I not tear the place down," Rick said."I told them I had no plans to."Not long afterward, Matt came home from college and, casting about for something to do, proposed to his parents that he turn the building into a bar.
