Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Frasier revival has explained a Cheers pothole 34 years later and turned it into the show's best joke. Frasier began as an ancillary character on Cheers but Kelsey Grammer's neurotic psychiatrist quickly moved up to series regular.
Even though Freddy was raised by psychiatrists and went to the best schools, he dropped out of Harvard to become a firefighter, something that has made him and Frasier estranged. Add to that the fact that he avoided Martin's funeral, and the familial dynamics are set to mirror the situation between Frasier and his own father, who never could relate to Frasier's elitism.
Since Frasier started as a limited character on Cheers without earning his own sitcom until years later, Martin was an anecdote, not a fully realized character. In season 2 of Frasier when Sam Malone visits the good doctor in Seattle, naturally the issue of Marty's mortality comes up, forcing Frasier to admit that he'd been estranged from his father at the time he was discussing him at the bar, so he made up the fact that he was dead.
Freddy Lying About Frasier Dying Is The Pilot's Best Joke As a sterling example of blue-collar integrity, Freddy is embarrassed by his father being Frasier Crane who, not only casts a long intellectual shadow, but is too fastidious to be relatable. While hanging out with his firefighter buddies, Freddy decides to tell them that Frasier died, except that Frasier surprises him in the same bar.
The estrangement between Frasier and his father, as well as their numerous attempts to reconnect formed Frasier's emotional core, so it's not surprising that its revival would seek to duplicate that between Frasier and his son. Not only does it bring Frasier closer to Martin by him empathizing with being considered an embarrassment to his own son, but it also allows Frasier to be in on the joke in one of the revival's best scenes.
