Franklin County officials are considering allowing jail officers to execute arrest warrants for illegal immigrants held at the facility. The proposal, discussed at a recent county commissioners meeting, aims to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to assist in tracking immigration violations. If approved, the policy would grant jail officers the authority to serve arrest warrants on 'designated aliens' and transfer them to ICE for removal. Officials argue this would help enforce ICE detainers, ensuring individuals arrested in Franklin County and serving their sentences could be detained for up to 48 hours for potential ICE transfer.

Franklin County officials are in discussions to possibly give county jail officers the ability to execute arrest warrants for illegal immigrants being held at the facility.

This was discussed at the recent county commissioners meeting on Wednesday, where commissioners talked about teaming up with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a way to assist ICE with tracking down immigration violations. If approved, the policy would allow officers at the jail the ability to execute arrest warrants on "designated aliens" and would allow the "power and authority to serve warrants of removal" to transfer illegal immigrants to ICE.

Officials said this would help enforce ICE detainers, meaning if somebody is arrested in Franklin County and serves their sentence, somebody trained at the jail can serve an ICE warrant and keep that person detained for no more than 48 hours. If the individual is not transferred to an ICE field office by then, the person will be released from the county jail.Commissioners can however vote on it at a future meeting.
