Canoe slalom great Jessica Fox and hockey player Eddie Ockenden will sail along the Seine through the grandeur of Paris during the Olympic opening ceremony carrying the national flag.
Jessica Fox will sail along the Seine through the grandeur of Paris during the Olympic opening ceremony with a flag in her hand and a tear in her eye. There might be nothing like carrying the national flag on home soil, but for Fox, doing it in France is the next best thing.
The flag bearer announcement was made at the Monnais de Paris, a masterpiece of neoclassical French architecture stretching along the left bank of the Seine. It has a particular resonance for Olympic athletes; it’s where the medals to be awarded in Paris were made. Each one has a piece of the Eiffel Tower in it.
Former basketballer Andrew Gaze, who carried the flag in Sydney, described it as “one of the highest honours in Australian sport, to be able to introduce some of the greatest athletes that we’ve produced in the country to the rest of the world”.Fox’s family moved to Sydney when she was four, settling around Penrith where the Nepean River, which nurtured her talent, meets the Blue Mountains.
