A four-time state champion coach will be stepping down fresh off of a second straight Class 3A state title victory. Mars Hill Bible coach Darrell Higgins is stepping down after 10 seasons as the Panthers’ head football coach, the school announced on Friday afternoon.
Defensive coordinator Will Kilpatrick has been named the team’s interim head coach during a search for Higgins’ replacement.38-21 victory over Bayside Academy in the Class 3A state championship game in Birmingham“Ten years ago I came to MH looking for Christian education for my kids,” Higgins said in a release. “It’s brought me that and so many more blessings that it’s difficult to even think about leaving. I’ve fallen in love with the community, the students, everything about it. “It’s an unbelievably special place, and that’s why all three of my kids graduated here. The support of this school has been more than I could ever ask for.” During his 10 seasons as Mars Hill’s head football coach, he compiled a 107-27 record that included eight straight 10-win seasons; the Panthers went 0-10 in his first season in 2016. He led the program to its first state title in 2018, a 53-26 win over Linden in the Class 1A state title game. He also won a state title at the Class 2A level in 2020 before leading his team to back-to-back championships in 3A for the last two seasons. Higgins’ playoff record as Mars Hill Bible’s head coach was 29-5. His teams also won seven region championships and went 53-9 in region play during his tenure.Troy signee Jaxon Penn was recently honored as the Class 3A Back of the Year, marking the third player under Higgins’ tenure as the program’s head coach to earn major ASWA honors; 36 players also earned all-state honors during Higgins’ tenure.
